Summer Series Part 4: Deadbird - Twilight Ritual

So I just got home from a sweet show featuring Chicago stalwarts Indian, Psilocin, the sweet new band with some of the guys from Raise the Red Lantern, and the mighty Deadbird, so I thought this would be a good time to add a review of their show/record to my little series here.

The LAST time Deadbird came to town they played at this place called The Note (which is no longer around, unfortunately), and they were the last band of six to play, and the show didn't start until like, 1:00 in the morning. My friends and I gave up after a while and went home. We just don't rock hard enough to wait until 4:00 a.m. to see Deadbird.

I now know that we were wrong to leave. Very. Fucking. Wrong.

Deadbird might be the single heaviest band I've ever seen. They sounded I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E. Just incredible. I exhausted all my good ludicrous similes on the Esoteric record, but I think I've got one more for Deadbird:

Seeing Deadbird is like being bear hugged by a yeti. You're just grabbed by this giant, warm, fuzzy mass and crushed until your ribs crack.

For real.

I actually had to fold my arms in front of my chest, not because I'm from the midwest and that's what we do at shows, but because if I took my arms down I could actually feel it punching me in the chest and it was kind of creepy. It felt like I was having heart palpitations or some shit.

So yeah. It was fan-fucking-tastic.

As for their new record, it's also a pretty dense slab of awesome. Their last record was, I thought, great. When it came out Ryan and I were real stoked on it. I kind of played it out for myself, however, which made me a little sick of it. You do that with records every once and a while, right?

So when this one arrived I was looking forward to checking it out with some fresh ears, and it didn't disappoint. The songwriting is better, the songs are heavier, the playing is tighter, and the whole thing has a great, dark, moody feel to it.

The moral of the story is that if you haven't already had your head kicked in by Deabird, you probably should.

I'll be out of town for a few days, so I might not be updating this, but when I get back, I'm going to be tackling records by Ganon, Karysun, Across Tundras, Steak Number 8, and Ocoai, among others. Keep watching the skies!
