Locrian - Drenched Lands

So my computer is back to its old, working self, and they were even able to save most of my data which means that
a) I don't have to slit my wrists because I lost a bunch of school work, and
b) here is the promised Locrian review, all safe and sound:
---
Locrian is a band from here in Chicago that we've played with a couple of times. Last time we were on a bill with them it was at a house and after we finished playing in the basement they rocked their set in the kitchen. I actually had no idea they were playing, and thought someone was just cranking a CD really loud. As we loaded our stuff out we all pretty much went "oh... Locrian's playing in the kitchen. That's totally sweet."
Locrian packs this CD, "Drenched Lands" full of their brand of ambient/noise kitchen-rock. In the wake of SunnO))) there's been a lot of bands who seem to think that all you need to do to kick ass is play some low tones, feedback a little, and then wait for the accolades from the New York Times to come rolling in.
These bands are universally wrong.
As Ryan put it in a conversation we had a few weeks ago, none of them seem to get why SunnO))) is good. Weird as it is to say, there's a good way to do minimalist riffing and noise and there's a shitty way to do minimalist riffing and noise. Locrian fall into the former category, creating a pretty cool wall of soundscapes on this record. They tend to be really engaging as far as music that's, you know, not really engaging goes.
One thing that works in their favor is the amount of variety on the album. They move pretty seamlessly through different kinds of drone stuff, from minimalist tones, to feedback walls, to doomier sounding riffage with some raw screaming over it. They do it all well, and are pretty good at knowing when to shift the mood of the record up or down a notch in intensity.
Overall, if you're a fan of dark ambient, drone, or doom stuff, you definitely should give Locrian a listen. They'll be playing a the Matchitehew Assembly fest here in Chicago soon, perhaps in the kitchen.
